Community Health Mission (formerly know as Community HealthCare Center/Savannah Health Mission) is a private, non-profit 501(3) tax-exempt organization which is formed from the merger of two organizations, Community HealthCare Center and Savannah Health Mission. Community Healthcare Center and Savannah Health Mission have provided essential primary healthcare and preventive health services to the uninsured in the Savannah area. The merger brought the strengths of the respective organizations together to more fully and efficiently serve the ever increasing uninsured population. Savannah Health Mission was established in 1996 by Dr. Chip Goldsmith as the first volunteer healthcare clinic in Savannah. Community Healthcare Center began in 2001 as a Volunteer in Medicine model under the leadership of Dr. Cecil Bendush.
Discussion of a possible merger for these agencies began in January 2006.Members of both Boards acknowledged the potential to build on similarities,leverage existing resources, and enhance capacity to meet the increasing demand for healthcare services to the uninsured. In May 2006, Community Healthcare Center and Savannah Health Mission merged Board oversight as it began an “engagement” period that would continue through March 2007 when the Board voted unanimously to merge – the new agency to be named Community Health Mission.
The new emerged organization Community Health Mission (CHM) operates 5 days a week with convenient hours for our working patients. Run by 12 paid staff and 65 community volunteers (physicians, nurses, health promoters), Community Health Mission provided in 2006 with 10,945 patient visits. From 2001 to the end of 2006 we reach the benchmark of 39,427 free patient visits. All services are provided free of charge to our patients.
